The Sony DVD/VCR combo player is a good product. It works fine. We have no problem so far.
As noted in other reviews, this model doesn’t have a tuner or a coax connector, and also it won’t record a DVD onto a VHS tape. I bought it in person (at Costco, our local “big box” wholesale store, so the deal was even sweeter), and I read the limitations on the outside of the box before I purchased. I also already knew our TV set had the required red, white, and yellow input jacks. It would be very frustrating to order online and not realize what connectivity this model includes… and doesn’t include.

We use this DVD/VCR combo with a standalone TV set which serves only as a monitor, with no TV broadcast access either by cable or airwaves. This model is excellent for this purpose.

It was so easy to set up, I didn’t even need to look at the instructions. If you can match red, white, and yellow plugs to jacks, and you understand the difference between “line in” and “line out,” you can set this up in a couple minutes. If you are confused on those points, you can follow the instruction manual.

Switching between VHS and DVD play is effortless and intuitive. If you are using the controls on the front of the unit, you can go from DVD to VHS play without adjusting anything. If you are using the remote control, you press a button to select either “DVD” or “VIDEO.” If you have a Sony TV set, the remote control will work on that too! (We don’t have a Sony TV, so we have to keep our old TV remote to adjust the volume, and turn the TV on and off.)

Like all DVD players and VCRs, this combo should be placed on a level surface while operating. We learned this lesson the hard way when our old DVD player and VCR both broke down. We had them perched on top of the TV set and they were not level. We had trouble with discs skipping and tapes having tracking problems, until both machines stopped working completely. We built a new shelf just for our new SLV-D281P to keep it level, and playback is flawless.

The most important thing to realize about this model is that the only connectivity is through the red, white, and yellow RCA jacks. If this fits with your existing equipment, or you can easily obtain any additional adapters you may need, then the SLV-D281P is an excellent choice. Samsung MR-00EA1 MediaLive Digital Media Adapter First, I was concerned about the location: our existing Samsung 32″ TV is mounted onto the framed backside of the pantry by the dining room table. I didn’t think I was going to be able to put it behind the TV, and if it had to go inside the pantry the remote wouldn’t work. Both points were met (it was small but not small enough – it went inside the pantry).
Pro – small size
Pro – can use your existing TV remote
Pro – includes HDMI cable

Second, my PC didn’t immediately see it, I messed around with router/network/firewall settings before I just recycled the MediaLive, then everything worked perfectly (I have Windows 7, so a little uncertainty there).
Pro – works with Windows 7
Pro – didn’t have to change any firewall/router/network settings after all

Finally, it came up and recognized that there was an update available, so immediately updated and came back online. I use a wired connection, no complaints about the speed or connectivity. I saw and played my recorded TV, but didn’t see any movies. Also, some of the menu items were missing (this is my first Extender). Didn’t know that NetFlix was NOT available for the MediaLive. It didn’t see my Amazon Unbox videos immediately. I had to point it to my folder where the videos were stored before it would see them, and viola – they played perfectly!
Pro – updates itself automatically
Con – doesn’t automatically see your Video libraries
Con – NetFlix not included (I don’t use NetFlix anyways, so no loss for me)
Pro – does play Amazon UnBox

I’m not so concerned about the startup and shutdown time – it wasn’t that bad, nothing to complain about. Also, as I don’t have HD cable on my PC, I haven’t recorded in HD so far. I’m not sure about NetFlix and UnBox HD offerings either…

Overall, great little box if you have a Samsung TV (2008 or newer)!

I have had this Unit since May 2001. Not a problem From Day One. I recommend the Sony Model and Menu as being greatly superior than the Hughes Models!!!
This was one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. The unit is easy-to-use, acts as a DirecTV receiver, and it’s just amazing. It really has revolutionized the way we view television. I think I paid for it, and then 0 for the lifetime TiVo service. This was all in 2001, I believe.

The only flaw is that I did have to send it in for repairs… twice. And yes, Sony’s Customer Service was truly terrible. When they shipped the unit back, they also didn’t include all the cables, etc. that I had sent along with it, so I had to wait until they sent those accessories. I think I had to pay something like in various shipping costs, but ultimately I’ve had the unit for at least 5 years and it is still in everyday use.

Nowadays the units have more features – network connectivity, a better organization of the list of recordings, etc. But I don’t think I’d really use the network feature. The better organization would be nice. However, since I paid the 0 lifetime service, we’re sticking with the Sony T60 for a long, long time.

I gave the unit 4 stars despite the repair woes because, when the unit has been working, it’s been awesome compared to the other boxes offered at the time. Enjoy! After ordering and return a few photo frames, I ordered the Opteka illuminations 15″.

First of all, it’s not “mirror” like as the image from the manufacturer has shown. When the frame is off, the interior rectangle is much darker than the exterior “mirror” rectangle.

The exterior rectangle is shown to be a light silver reflective surface. In fact it is reflective, but is actually dark silver/gray.

The frame is obviously reflective, and when there is a light on nearby and the frame is turned on there is a light reflection from almost every angle when looking at the frame. The angle of view isn’t that large. If the frame is used table top the reflection is unavoidable (due to the vertical angle not being parallel to the wall), when the frame is hung on the wall, there is still a reflection, but it could be avoided a little better.

The power dongle is HUGE. Not even remotely close to the size of the other power dongles provided by even Opteka themselves. It has a short cord coming from the frame and then the huge dongle and a longer cord going to the outlet. If you’re going to keep this frame, a new power cord needs to be bought.

The response time of the remote control is very slow, but not much slower than other photo frames that I’ve experimented with.

And like other Opteka frames, there is no random function on this frame.

There are no reviews online of this frame, and this might explain why. 47th street photo is the only store that sells it at this point on Amazon or anywhere on the internet.

We have a toddler and needed a replacement–this is better than the original TIVO remote–but some of the buttons are in different places…
I have been a TiVo user for many years, we own 4 units, 2 HD. Frankly I’ve always wanted a Glo because of the backlight but could never justify it for that reason alone. Recently I upgraded my AVR to the Sony STR-DN1000. Unfortunately the standard TiVo peanut will not work with this receiver (just doesn’t have the codes). Fortunately the Glo is a learning remote. I programmed the Glo to:

- run the TiVo (default, no programming necessary obviously)
- power on my Panasonic Plasma display
- volume the AVR
- set the INPUT button to switch the AVR to HDMI 1 (TiVo) and set the MUTE button (which I never use anyway) to HDMI 2 (my PS3)

That covers it for me.

As for the remote itself:

It’s considerably better than the standard TiVo remote. Why?:

– MUCH better buttons. The buttons have a more tactile feel with a slight positive click. No more mushy buttons. Even the TiVo button is improved.

– WEIGHT. Nice heft.

– SELECT button is now in the center of the directional pad, quite a bit handier than below as it is on the standard remote.

– BACKLIT! It’s not terribly bright but it’s pretty good. It’s also ambient light sensitive so it only turns on at night, no wasted batteries during the day. Contrary to what another reviewer said, the backlight function can be turned off.

– TEXTURE. The bottom half of the backside is textured which makes it easy to tell which way is up in the dark.

– POWER. As it’s predecessor, very powerful IR. I don’t understand why other remote manufacturers don’t do this. Point it at the ceiling or through a blanket, it will work.

Cons? Though it is a learning remote, it has few available buttons for learning as most the buttons are TiVo specific and cannot be programmed (Thumbs buttons, Aspect, etc.). That’s OK though, it has enough for what I want it to do. The price is also much too high. This should be tops. TiVo: C00210 The ultimate remote control for your TiVo box.
